What play position is best for babies?
For well rounded development it is important for your baby to play in a variety of positions.
Focusing excessively on a single position may lead to an uneven distribution of muscle strength and activation, which could slow your baby's development.
Parents should consider rotating their baby through all of the below play positions:
Tummy time: Tummy time is an important position for babies to develop strong neck and upper body muscles. Aim for at least 15-20 minutes of tummy time per day, gradually increasing the time as the baby gets stronger.
Side lying: Side lying is a comfortable position for babies to rest and play. It also helps your baby learn to roll over. You can encourage your baby to play with toys while lying on their side.
Back lying: Back lying is a safe and comfortable position for babies to play and rest. It also helps with the development of motor skills and visual tracking. You can place toys above your baby's head to encourage them to reach and grab.
Sitting upright (for babies 4+ months): As your baby gets older and stronger, they can start to sit upright with support. This position helps with the development of core strength and balance. You can support your baby with pillows or cushions while they sit and play.
Start with 5 minutes in each of these positions during play time. Gradually increase this as your baby grows and develops
Remember to always supervise your baby during playtime and never leave them unattended in any position!
